Alas, poor Ridley Motorbikes, we barely knew ye, but looking back at them now I’d say they were one of the few modern motorized bicycles I could actually get excited about. Vintage looks, 70cc engines, certainly inadequate brakes… well, we’d have to do something about that last part.

Even though they put up a good fight in 2008, it seems 2009 and a seven year legal battle with Harley were too much for this little company to bear. *snif* Don’t you just wanna give ‘em a hug? Poor guys.

The bike has quite a few options depending on your need and application. Their website even has a neat “build to suit” feature where you can add and subract the options you need.Three-wheeled cargo scooters like this appear to be very popular in the Scandinavian countries and I can see why.

I would think something like this would go over big in any urban area and especially Southeast Asia where so much of their inner city cargo is hauled around via scooters and motorcycles.

While there I checked out the mopeds they have for sale. I am not in the market for yet another bike, but it’s always fun just to see what is out there. That’s when I stumbled upon their “Yuba Bike” Motomatic Moped.

As you can see, this isn’t your Berkley Big Sisters moped. The hard tail bobber look of this thing doesn’t just demand attention, it walks into your living room and slaps you across the face.

If I had the means, I would be calling on the crew at 1977 tomorrow to arrange for pickup.

What do you get when a band of 20 Dutch (Hollanders, Niederlanders, les Hollandais) philanthropists ride a benefit for the children of Indonesia in the United States on French mopeds?

“It’s like ‘we are the muphuckin’ WORLD‘ up in this b!+¢h! THAT’S what you get.”, says “It’s like We Are the World on 2-wheels”, to paraphrase longtime scooter advocate Steve Guzman, editor of the popular 2-wheeled website TheScooterScoop.

In one week (that’s 3 days after the big G1 google Android phone announcement), this courageous group of Dutch riders from the Solex Club will depart from Steenwijk, Holland and eventually arrive to deluxe accommodations at Chicago’s Super 8 Motel. The next day they will meet at Hollywood “Throw a kit on that bitch!” Holt’s hangout, Warbux Mopeds, to prepare for the grueling 2666 mile journey across Route 66.

They plan on arriving in Santa Monica on October 22nd for a big celebration to be held by Big Ass Motors. Steve E. is a BIG Velo Solex fan, so it only makes sense. Anyone still alive after the ordeal will return to Holland on October 24th to tell the tale of their fantastic journey.

From the Villa.Fi flickr collection (see title link) comes this shot of a moped, the likes of which I’ve never seen. Three wheels, full front fairing, windshield with wiper, roof. Looks like it could have actually been a production model. Here’s another shot (-) it’s blurrier (+) but you can see more detail.

Oh… and I can’t really see any pedals, so it may not be an actual moPED… more of a cub I suppose.
