One benefit of having a Honda plant in your own country is that the team there has a REAL understanding of your market; take Thailand for instance. The Honda Thailand factory is producing exactly what the population demands (a large number of big-wheel scooters in the 110 cc-150 cc range).

Last week Honda announced that they will begin sales of a new Cub-type automatic transmission (AT) scooter model, Wave110i AT, next month. This new Wave is based on the last series of Wave110i, which is highly acclaimed for its fuel efficiency, but the new Wave110i AT features a newly implemented CV-Maic transmission. The starting price will be 44,900 baht (about $1400 US), with an annual sales plan of 50,000 units.

We (or Honda America, rather) will also start selling $1,400 Honda scooters when Wyoming and Colorado begin selling 50,000 scooters a year, built in their Fort Collins manufacturing plant.

You can read all about the new, advanced Honda Wave 110i on the Honda Worldwide website.

Honda’s gone and done it! Adding an automatic transmission to the Cub has been on Honda’s upgrade short list for some time now, and just two days ago Akisan sent us the scoop on Honda’s new CV-Matic engine for Cubs (all underbone type Hondas).

Here’s a snippet from the press release:

TOKYO, Japan, September 8, 2009 – [...]

TOKYO, Japan, September 8, 2009 – Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a new automatic transmission, the CV-Matic (with 14 patents pending!), which can be used in combination with Cub-style engines. This new fully automatic transmission further enhances the practicality and convenience of the Cub-type models that have won fans worldwide, especially in developing countries. The new system will be available with Cub-style scooters to be released in the ASEAN region starting in 2010.

ASEAN is not a misspelling of Asian, it’s pronounced AH-see-ahn and it means the Association of Southeast Asian Nations… so yeah, it means Asian and that means there are currently no plans to share the love with us meat eatin‘ ‘Mericans. Dang it.

Here’s a photo of their new cooling system based on Honda’s small-motorcycle automatic transmission technology, which protects and enhances the durability of the drive belt and allows for a more compact design with shorter distances between pulleys. Thanks to this advance, the positioning of the engine does not need to be significantly altered, optimizing layout design freedom.

Just got word that the long overdue Sachs Madass 125s are now on showroom floors! You might recall, back-in-the-days, that we reviewed the Madass 50, distributed by Tomberlin. With so much potential and so little performance our next question was “how can get one with a larger engine?”

Well, prior to today, the answer was always “cram a bigger GY6 in there”. Now the answer is, go to your local Cobra Powersports dealer and lay down your $2699 (MSRP… about $101 more than the Symba 101cc) . I’d like to feel what sort of difference there is between the 125cc and the old 50cc version. While I locate my local dealer why don’t you browse over this press release:

August 10, 2009 – Kennesaw, GA – While it’s true that every Sachs motorcycle and scooter is innovative by definition, it’s also true that in the history of Sachs Bikes this may be the most unique design ever released by the historic German company. The Sachs MadAss 125 is an urban light-weight motorcycle designed to rock the perception of what a motorcycle should look like and ride like.

The MadAss has an exclusive Sachs engineered frame design that is the whole key to how the bike handles so well. The banana swing arm, the rear mono shock, and main frame all run parallel to each other. This allows jolts from the rear wheel to be sent forward into the front suspension, and not up into the rider. Fuel is carried in the frame, and together you get an incredibly light and nimble machine weighing just 209 lbs. Other design features include twin 55 watt headlights, dual disc brakes, low profile tubeless tires on 16″ alloy rims, and 43 mm front forks.

The MadAss is being sold in the U.S. exclusively by Peirspeed Powersports Dealers. Bill Peirce, President of Peirspeed said, “The first shipment of 2010 Sachs MadAss 125’s are now available on dealer showrooms. We’re excited that the demand for the MadAss 125 has remained high ever since dealers started taking pre-orders a year ago. And despite tough economic times, dealers are reporting brisk sales.”

The 2010 Sachs MadAss 125 has been available in a small number of Peirspeed dealerships starting the first of August 2009. More Peirspeed dealers are expected to receive their first shipments within 60 days.

“The MadAss is something that appeals to a group of riders that want to stand out in a crowd and draw attention everywhere they go,” added Mr. Peirce. “Consumers are looking for fuel efficient alternative transportation like scooters and small displacement motorcycles. This SACHS product gives the customer a choice beyond the traditional.”

“MadAss 125 riders are reporting 85 to 110 MPG’s,” adds Peirce. ‘And while most riders buy a MadAss because of the design, it’s a nice bonus to get such great gas mileage.”

Peirspeed dealer Bill Weslow, owner of Moto-Scoot in Milwaukee says, “The MadAss is a bike that sets itself, and the rider apart from the crowd.” Mr. Weslow adds, “People stop and ask MadAss owners about their bike every time they ride it. This gives MadAss owners a real pride of ownership, and the satisfaction of knowing they made the right choice.”

Specifications:
Engine: Air-cooled single cylinder 4-stroke
Performance: 11 BHP @ 7,500 RPM
Transmission: 4-Speed
Front Brake: Hydraulic disc, 260mm
Rear Brake: Hydraulic disc, 215mm
Tires (Front): 90/90-16 M/C 48J
Tires (Rear): 120/80-16 M/C 48J
Weight: 209 lbs
Fuel Capacity: 1.22 gallons
Colors: Black, Graphite, Yellow and Silver

MSRP: $2,699 (MSRP excludes tax, prep, and delivery fees. Pricing may change at any time without notification)

About Peirspeed

The Peirspeed brand is owned by Cobra Powersports. Cobra Powersports has a long history of providing top quality scooters and ATVs. Products include SACHS Bikes, Peirspeed scooters, and TGB ATVs.

About SACHS Bikes

SACHS was founded by Carl Marschütz in 1886 in Germany. Today SACHS produces several 50cc to 400cc scooters, motorcycles and mopeds.

Anyone out there see one in person yet?

(Oh! You ride a Postie? I’ve got a special delivery for you my dear.)

I like work-themed bikes. I’ve always said if I got my hands on a Big Ruckus, I’d turn it into a military messenger bike. Well, if I got my hands on a cub, I would undoubedly spend untold hours and dollars begging my friends Aki and Kuroneko to ship me parts to transform it into a MD90, Japanese Postal bike.

  Like THIS:

Complete with single seat, massive topcase and that little medical looking bag on the front rack. There are a number of other subtle differences… and of course, I’d wanna capture each and every one.

Aki tells me that the special edition Honda postal scooters are never sold to the public. Some people will build them from standard Cubs with bicycle parts, some sell them grey market.

If you are into that sorta thing, I’ve got some sites for you to see (thanks to Aki and Kuroneko… though they should know better than to encourage me).

Here’s one Resto Job done in Japan. I like how they call it the “the postal turnip”. :D

The Postie Bike Garage has got some good info on the turnip. They say the MD = Mail Delivery

Here’s another restoration / conversion page where you can see some rim details.

Yuubinbike.com has some nice MD90 owner photos and a little section called “I like post office bike”.

Here’s a used “Red Beet” postie for sale. It’s a more modern design (1982). Honda build limited numbers of these “Red-Cub” scoots as a tribute to the official MD service bike.

If you are doing a conversion, you might be lucky and find parts on a Japanese Yahoo Auction.

Kijima has a parts catalog, but from what I understand you can only order them if you are a post office official :(

Until I do get my hands on a cub, this is about as close as I can get to owning an MD90.

There are other great “professional” uses for the cub… Noodle delivery? Buy your equipment here or here.

On December 28, 2008 BBC 2 broadcast a special edition of the award winning show Top Gear in which the hosts were challenged to travel approximately 800 miles from Saigon to Halong Bay in the span of 8 days.

Traditionally the hosts equip themselves with cars using money supplied by the program, but this time they did not have enough money for 4 wheels and, reluctantly for Jeremy, the resigned themselves to buying a bit more economical. Jeremy ended up with a peach of a Vespa, James bought a Honda Cub and Richard snagged a small displacement Soviet motorcycle.

Their journey produces comical lows and breath-taking highs as the trio treks across city and country in pursuit of victory.

Well a more approachable option for you might be The Australian Postie Bike Challenge.

The event is a 10 day ride across Australia (October 3 through 13, 2009) and a fund raiser for several different charities that are encountered along the route. The unique thing about this challenge is what is supplied to the participants:

For a little less than $5,000 AUD they supply you with a Honda CT110 “Postie” to ride, fuel, meals, support truck and crew that follow you on your 3,000 to 4,000 mile journey across the Outback. You can travel in packs or alone, fast or slow, whatever floats your boat. Check out their FAQ for additional details.

Many of you have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the first new cub type scooters in the USA since Honda discontinued the Passport back in 1983 (actually, there have been others but nothing worth mentioning). Well my friends, the wait will finally be over in just three weeks. You can expect the first of the cubs to begin shipping May 5th from SYM’s headquarters in Alabama. The long awaited Symba will be followed by the Fly Scout just one month later, shipping from California.

The Symba has all its cards laid out on the table, and it’s a pretty nice hand. Will the Scout be able to trump the Symba? Well, I know she’s got a few tricks up her sleeve. We won’t really know until around mid June. In the meantime, be sure to visit your local dealer around the second week in May to kick some Symba tires!
